Thailand Vacation Series – Chiang Mai

Experiencing the merging of the past into the present in Chiang Mai where locals are proud of the city’s 700-year history. Chiang Mai literally means new city and has retained the name despite having celebrated its 700th anniversary in 1996. King Meng Rai founded the city as the capital of the Lanna (A Million Rice Fields) Kingdom on Thursday, 12th April 1296 during the same period of time as the establishment of the Sukhothai Kingdom. King Meng Rai the Great conferred with his friends, King Ramkhamhaeng of Sukhothai and King Ngam Muang of Phayao before choosing the site where the capital of the Lanna Kingdom was to be founded.

From then, Chiang Mai not only became the capital and cultural core of the Lanna Kingdom, it was also the centre of Buddhism in northern Thailand. King Meng Rai himself was very religious and founded many of the city’s temples, which are still important today.

At the height of its power, the Lanna Kingdom extended its territory far into Burma and Laos, and southwards to Kamphaeng Phet a province above Sukhothai.

The Burmese conquered the Lanna Kingdom in 1556 ending the dynasty founded by King Meng Rai that lasted over 250 years. As Burma had occupied Chiang Mai for nearly 200 years, Burmese architectural influences are visible in many temples. At the end of the 18th century, King Taksin the Great regrouped the Thais in the south and finally drove the Burmese out with the help of King Kawila of Lampang thereby regaining Thai independence from Burma. Chiang Mai was then governed by a succession of princes who ruled the north as a Siamese protectorate under the Chakri dynasty. In the late 19th century, King Rama V appointed a high commissioner in Chiang Mai and it was only in 1939 that Chiang Mai finally came under the direct control of the central government in Bangkok the same time the country was renamed Thailand.

In the past, Chiang Mai was only accessible by river and elephants. More convenient access was achieved only when the railway line was completed in the late 1920’s. Moreover, the first motor vehicle driven directly from Bangkok arrived in Chiang Mai in 1932. Such isolation was more favorable to Chiang Mai as it helped to nurture and preserve the unique Lanna culture.

When we look at Chiang Mai today, it is the economic, cultural and communications hub of northern Thailand complete with excellent infrastructure, good roads, by passes and road tunnels, and reliable communications infrastructure.

Most of Chiang Mai’s mountains are oriented from north to south. Together they create a multitude of streams and tributaries including Mae Chaem, Mae Ngat and Mae Klang. One of Chiang Mai’s distinctive features is Doi Inthanon, Thailands highest peak, which is 2,575 meters above sea level. In addition, the province boasts flat, fertile valleys, which spread along the banks of the largest and most important river in Chiang Mai Mae Nam Ping (Ping River) which originates from the Chiang Dao mountain range.

Thailand Vacation Series – Samui

Ko Samui liegt im Golf von Thailand, etwa 84 Kilometer östlich der Provinz Surat Thani, das entspricht rund 700 Kilometer südlich von Bangkok. Als Coconut Island Bekannte, Ko Samui ist eine der bekanntesten und beliebtesten Attraktionen von Thailand. Mit einer Fläche von 247 Quadratkilometern ist Ko Samui die drittgrößte Insel von Thailand nach Phuket und Ko Chang (Trat Provinz). Die Topographie der Insel ist, dass von einer Ebene mit einer Bergkette in der Mitte und 7 wichtige Streams. Darüber hinaus gibt es einen 50-Kilometer asphaltierte Straße, die die Insel umschließt. Darüber hinaus erstreckt sich das Gebiet der Insel zu einer Gruppe von 48 umliegenden Inseln.

Die beste Zeit für einen Besuch Ko Samui ist von Februar bis April, wenn das Meer ruhig ist. Die südlichen Dialekt und die Standard-Thai-Sprache gesprochen, während Englisch weit verbreitet ist und in touristischen Gebieten verstanden werden.
Von Surat Thani nach Koh Samui
1. Express Boot
1. 1 Eine ausdrückliche Fähre von Songserm Reisen fährt von Pier Tha Thong in Surat Thani am 8. 00 a. m. und kommt zu Na Thon Pier in Samui bei 10. 30 a. m. jeden Tag. Für die Rückfahrt wird das Boot Na Thon Pier 2 auf. 00 S. m. und erreicht Tha Thong bei 4. 30 S. m.
1. 2 Schnellboote der Seatran Express betreiben drei Mal pro Tag zwischen Ban Don und Ko Samui. Die Abfahrtszeiten sind 7. 00 a. m. , 12. 30 S. m. und 2. 30 S. m. Die Fahrt dauert zwei Stunden.
2. Fähren von Seatran
Seatran Fähre, die 60 Autos und 400 Passagiere aufnehmen können, betreibt mehrere Fahrten pro Tag zwischen Don Sak (Surat Thani) und Ko Samui, ab 5. 00 a. m. bis 5. 00 S. m. Die Fahrt dauert ca. 1. 30 Stunden.
3. Nachtfähre
Eine langsame Nacht Fähre Ban Don Pier nachts um 11 S. m. und erreicht Na Thon Pier auf Samui rund 5 a. m. (6 Stunden). Für die Rückfahrt wird das Boot Na Thon Pier um 9. 00 S. m. und kommt in Ban Don Pier bei 4. 00 a. m. (7 Stunden).
Anreise zu den nahe gelegenen Inseln von Samui
1. Ko Pha-Ngan
1. 1 Na Thon Pier (Koh Samui) – Thong Sala Pier (Ko Pha-Ngan)
Songserm Travel Co. betreibt Fähren und Boote zwischen ausdrückliche Na Thon Pier auf Koh Samui und Thong Sala Pier auf Ko Pha-Ngan, viermal am Tag. Die Fahrt dauert ca. 45 Minuten für Express-Boote, und eine Stunde für den normalen Fähren.
1. 2 Bo Phut (Ko Samui) – Hat Rin (Ko Pha-Ngan)
Es gibt eine Fähre verlassen Bo Phut für Ko Pha-Ngan zweimal täglich um 9. 30 a. m. und 2. 30 S. m. Die Hin-und Rückflüge verlassen Hat Rin auf Ko Pha-Ngan bei 10. 30 a. m. und 3. 30 S. m.
2. Ang Thong Inseln
Die Besucher können ein Boot auf Koh Samui zu mieten Ang Thong. Die Gebühr hängt von der Boot Größe und Anzahl der Passagiere. Die Fahrt dauert 1. 30 Stunden. Es ist auch möglich, einen ganztägigen Ausflug mit dem Reiseveranstalter in Ko Samui organisiert wurde.
3. Ko Tao
Boot für Ko Tao sind Na Thon Pier von Ko Samui zur Verfügung.
