I know it is the rainy season, and that the greatest time to go is from Nov but as it is mid October is it ok? Never thoughts the odd downpour but should I assume rain all day and night?

If you are looking for an unspoiled tropical paradise look no further than Koh Phangan, located just three hours by sea from the mainland of Thailand. Phangan is quite close to Koh Samui in miles, but very distant in character. While Koh Samui is developed and commercialized, Phangan is more relaxed and still harbors a natural splendor. You will notice some development on Phangan, but for the most part it is just small enclaves of bungalows and the natural beauty of the island has not yet been spoiled.
Phangan Island is still a popular destination for backpackers and budget travelers, well known for its Full Moon Party the majority of young travelers see Phangan as one of the highlights of their time in Thailand. The party takes place at the southern end of the island in the town of calledHaad Rin, an unbelievable party spot consisting of criss-crossed side streets crammed with clubs, eating spots and souvenier shops, hotels to suit every budget and above all else the amazing Haad Rin Nok beach. At the time of the full moon, Haad Rin is jammed to the gills with revelers and advanced reservations are necessary if you wish to stay in Haad Rin during the full moon.
Traveling north from Haad Rin Nok we next come to Ban Tai, home to both the Half Moon Party and the Shiva Moon Party both huge parties themselves. Ban Tai is also where you will find the ‘horny mile’, a stretch of road almost a mile in length that is filled with lady bars on both sides. These bars are considerably more laid back than their counterparts in either Nana Plaza or Phuket and seem to be a top choice of the middle aged tourists who come to Phangan.
Even further north you will arrive at Thongsala, the only real town on the island, a vibrant mix of Thai shops, western bars and dining establishments together with traditional food stalls at every turn. After dark the main market square becomes an open air restaurant serviced by a couple of dozen street vendors who set up shop and ply their trade. Some of the best food on Phangan Island can be found here after the sun sets. Thongsala also houses the main boat pier for Phangan and creates a natural connection to the mainland.
Once you depart Thongsala and travel further north you will notice a severe change in the pace of life, everything is quieter here with only occasional houses appearing and small village settlements with local shops. The settlements of Wok Tum and Hing Kong are particularly lazy; both great locations for somebody looking for a longer term stay on Koh Phangan.
The distant northern reaches of the island are where the scuba divers come to take advantage of easy access to the reefs from the beach. Both Haad Salad and Haad Yao are reknowned for their warm clear waters and teeming marine life. You can also walk from here, via a sandbar to the island of Koh Ma, where snorkelers can have sights usually reserved for scuba divers.
On the northern end of Koh Phangan you will find Chaloklam, a squid fishing village with a amazing half moon beach. The seafood here is exceptional, brought straight from the sea each morning. At night you can see the lights of the multitude of squid boats that ply the waters in this area, and later watch them come in with their haul and dry it under the sun whilst you enjoy breakfast at a beachside restaurant.
Moving to the west side of the island you will discover Tong Nai Pan, originally a secluded backpacker haven now the site of the biggest developments upon Phangan. Luxury resorts cater to the sun bathers who all concur that the western beach is the most superb upon Koh Phangan.
