1. Which is better to take to Surat Thani, bus or train? By better I mean cheaper and more convenient.
2. What time does the night ferry leave from Surat Thani to Ko Phangan? Current cost? Cost and time for faster day ferries?

I would say by bus. You can get with a travel agent and go direct to the pier which is better then taken a bus to Surat Thani and then a van or bus to the pier. I believe you can also get the ferry ticket and bus trip combined with a travel agent or go to the Southern Bus Terminal. However, I don’t know of any boat from Surat Thani to Ko Phangan without go first to Koh Samui. The ferry to Koh Samui takes about an hour and half and the last ferry in the evening leaves about 6pm but sometime they may have an extra trip. Cost I am not sure I paid about 300 for me and the wife with a car so it can’t be that expensive. If you go by bus you leave in the evening and will get to ferry in the morning for the early runs. After you get to Koh Samui you have to take another boat to Koh Phangan.

My story. AND NO, I AM NOT EXAGERATING.
I have driven from here to Malaysia a lot of times, primarily to Penang, where I come from. I drove in a Volkswagen Golf from 1990. I started out as soon as I got my license in 1995 and nonetheless do it when a month.In 1998 I drove up to Hat Yai and Bangkok at the end of the year and the following year Chiang Mai. I modified to a Saab 9-three in 2000. Then, I went up to Laos in 2001 (visited my friends). In 2003 I drove up to China, Kunming. In 2006 I drove up to Fujian to visit my great grandfather and excellent excellent grandfather’s graves. In 2008, I drove all the way to Sichuan (and just before you inquire, it was two months just before the earthquake. I was on my way back home, just previous the m’sia/thai border when I heard it. Umm.. now for the end of this year I’m planning to drive to Russia. Share yours thanks.
